Vena del Gesso Romagnola Regional Park

Explore the Vena del Gesso Romagnola Regional Park: a world-class natural heritage

The Vena del Gesso Romagnola Regional Park is a protected natural area that covers over two thousand hectares. This park stands out for its peculiar karst morphologies, which include sinkholes, blind valleys and numerous caves, among which the most famous are the Grotta della Tanaccia and the Grotta del Re Tiberio.

The valleys crossed by the Santerno, Senio, Sintria and Lamone rivers, which cut through the Apennines in the western part of Romagna, are intersected by a gypsum ridge, known as the Vena del Gesso Romagnola. This calcium sulphate ridge, 25 kilometres long and an average of one and a half kilometres wide, represents the most impressive chalky formation in Italy. The Vena del Gesso crosses the territories of six municipalities: Casalfiumanese, Borgo Tossignano and Fontanelice in the province of Bologna, and Casola Valsenio, Riolo Terme and Brisighella in the province of Ravenna.

This chalky formation is characterized by its grandeur, the extraordinary morphological variety and the typicality of the flora and fauna, constituting an inestimable natural and historical wealth. Since 2023, the Vena del Gesso Romagnola has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, a certificate that underlines its importance and need for conservation.
